Built in 1890 and nestled among the historic homes of Galveston’s East End, The Mansion on 17th offers an intimate opportunity to experience the island as it was during one of its most extraordinary eras. Behind its doors, soaring ceilings, period antiques, historic artwork, and carefully preserved architectural details recall a time when Galveston was among the wealthiest and most cosmopolitan cities in Texas.
Our seven individually appointed rooms and suites celebrate the character of the late 19th century, blending Victorian elegance with the comforts expected by today’s traveler. Rather than recreating a modern hotel, The Mansion is designed to feel like stepping into a grand private residence from another age.
Each morning, guests are invited to enjoy breakfast at the Mansion, a tradition that remains at the heart of the stay. Begin the day surrounded by the atmosphere of historic Galveston before setting out to explore the Strand, the waterfront, the Grand 1894 Opera House, and the remarkable architecture of the island.
Throughout the Mansion, antique furnishings, artwork, and decorative details evoke the world of the late 1800s. Wander the halls, admire the craftsmanship, or simply settle into one of the gracious common rooms and imagine Galveston at the height of its Gilded Age—when fortunes were made along the waterfront and magnificent homes rose throughout the island.

For more than half a century, the property has welcomed visitors to the island, previously operating as The Victorian Inn and Schaefer Haus. Today, The Mansion on 17th continues that tradition while returning the focus to what makes the property truly extraordinary: the house, its history, and the enduring romance of Gilded Age Galveston.

The Hitchcock Suite
This suite is dedicated to Alfred Hitchcock, the renowned filmmaker and director. (It was formerly known as the Frankfurt Room). According to local legend, and as told to us by the previous owners, he once stayed at the Mansion and was sitting on the balcony of this suite. He was inspired by the birds he saw perched on a nearby telephone wire to create his famous film "The Birds."
The Balinese Room

The Balinese Room was one of the most famous nightclub and casinos in the country, known for attracting celebrities and gangsters during the Prohibition era. Many famous entertainers performed at The Balinese Room, including Frank Sinatra, the Rat Pack, Bob Hope, and Duke Ellington. Despite being damaged by several hurricanes over the years, the Balinese Room remained a popular attraction until it was destroyed by Hurricane Ike in 2008.
The Hendley Room
